In Ukraine, preparations have begun for the implementation of a law banning the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), passed on August 20, 2024. In Cherkasy, supporters of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) seized the cathedral of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) on their second attempt. On October 17, they occupied the church and fired gas pistols at parishioners. At that time, the believers, led by Metropolitan Theodosius of Cherkasy, managed to defend the building. However, the attackers returned with supporters and government representatives, violently breaking into the cathedral, beating believers, using tear gas, and injuring Metropolitan Theodosius. After the seizure, the metropolitan informed the faithful that they would now have to hold services in their homes and apartments. The head of the Synodal Department for Church-Society Relations called the incident "outrageous terror."
