On May 30, a delegation of monastics from the Russian Orthodox Church, led by Metropolitan Isidore of Smolensk and Dorogobuzh, visited the residence of the Coptic Patriarchs in Cairo. The guests were received by His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, the Coptic Orthodox Patriarch.
Pope Tawadros II warmly welcomed the delegation, recalling his visits to Russia in 2014 and 2017 and his meetings with Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. He expressed gratitude for the love and attention given to fostering bilateral relations between the churches and acknowledged the care of the Russian Church towards Copts living in Russia, particularly students in Russian universities.
Metropolitan Isidore conveyed greetings from Patriarch Kirill, emphasizing the importance that the Moscow Patriarch places on developing friendly interchurch relations. The Metropolitan expressed the honor of being guests of the Coptic Church and visiting Egypt, the cradle of monasticism. He noted that mutual visits by representatives of Russian and Egyptian monasticism are a significant part of bilateral relations and are conducted within the framework of the Commission on Interchurch Dialogue.
The Russian Church delegation arrived in Egypt on May 28 to visit sites significant to the history of Christian monasticism and to become acquainted with the contemporary life of the Coptic Church's male and female monasteries.
