Saint Artemy Verkolsky was born in 1532 in the village of Verkole, Dvina region, into a pious peasant family. Brought up in the fear of God and Christian piety, St. Artemy was also distinguished in childhood by meekness, obedience and diligence. At the age of 12, while working in the field, he was killed by lightning. Superstitious villagers left the body of blessed Artemy, as if he had died of sudden death, undone and laid it in the forest, on top of the ground, covering it with brushwood and birch bark.
So it lay, forgotten by everyone, for 32 years. But in 1577, the relics of St. Artemia was miraculously found incorruptible and became famous for many miracles and cures of diseases. So, during the malignant fever that spread in the Dvina region, the Verkolsky villager Kallinik, took birch bark from the coffin of St. Artemy, hung it to the cross on the chest of his dying son, and he was healed.
Subsequently, icons of the righteous Artemy were painted. Shavings remained from the boards on which they were written. From them, the sick also received cures for their ailments. A monastery was founded at the place where the relics of the holy boy were found, where his holy relics were laid.
