The Romanian village of Fărcașa in Neamț County hosted a solemn ceremony marking the local proclamation of the canonization of St. Olympia of Fărcașa, one of 16 Romanian women recently recognized as saints by the Romanian Orthodox Church.

The celebrations were centered on a festive Divine Liturgy led by Metropolitan Theophan of Moldavia and Bukovina, concelebrated by several bishops of the Romanian Orthodox Church. Following the service, the Synodal Tomos of canonization was publicly read, officially confirming the inclusion of St. Olympia in the Church calendar with her annual feast day set for July 4. The decree also states that she may be honored as the heavenly patroness of newly built and restored churches.

A message from Romanian Patriarch Daniel, read during the ceremony, described St. Olympia as a model of sacrificial motherhood, profound faith, and Christian charity.

"In her life we see the image of a Christian mother devoted to her children, an example of living faith expressed through love for others, and a readiness to face death with hope in the Resurrection," the patriarch's message said.

Born Olympia Tănase in 1880 to a peasant family in the village of Fărcașa, the future saint lived her entire life as an ordinary laywoman. She was neither a nun nor a theologian, but together with her husband raised eight children, instilling in them the Orthodox faith and Christian values despite poverty and difficult living conditions.

St. Olympia also holds a special place in the history of the Romanian Orthodox Church as the mother of St. Petronius of Prodromos, the renowned Romanian monk who spent many years at the Romanian Prodromos Skete on Mount Athos and was himself canonized.

According to accounts from those who knew her, Olympia was known for her exceptional piety. She attended church services regularly, observed the Church's fasting rules, cared for the poor and the sick, welcomed travelers into her home, and devoted long hours each day to prayer. Although she never learned to read or write, she reportedly memorized numerous prayers, psalms, and liturgical hymns.

Church officials have emphasized that it was this life of humble Christian witness that formed the basis for her canonization. Rather than being recognized for martyrdom or monastic asceticism, St. Olympia was glorified as a holy laywoman whose ordinary family life reflected the teachings of the Gospel through faith, service, and the Christian upbringing of her children.

The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church approved the canonization of Olympia of Fărcașa in 2025 together with 15 other Romanian women honored for their holy lives. Their church-wide proclamation took place in February 2026 at the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest, while Saturday's celebration in Fărcașa marked the first local festivities dedicated to the newly canonized saint in her native village.
