The Righteous James of Borovichi, the Wonderworker of Novgorod, is especially revered in the Novgorod land. His name is associated with the city of Borovichi, the Holy Spirit Monastery, the Iversky Valdai Monastery and numerous testimonies of the gracious help that believers received through prayers to the saint.
The life of the righteous Jacob has come down to us in ancient legends. A 16th-century manuscript preserved in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra tells of the miraculous appearance of his relics. According to legend, this happened in 1452, on the Tuesday of Holy Week, not far from the Holy Spirit Monastery in Borovichi.
In the spring, when the Msta River overflowed and quickly carried its waters, residents saw an unusual phenomenon: a large ice floe was moving against the current. Thick steam rose from it, and on the ice floe itself there was a pine deck, similar to the lower part of the coffin. The boy's body lay in it.
At first, the Borovichans, not understanding the significance of what had happened, were afraid and mistook the revealed body for an ordinary drowned man. They tried to push the ice floe away from the shore with long poles, but it kept coming back. Then the deck was taken downstream, but the next day the ice floe was back at its original location. This happened three times.
After that, a boy appeared to several elders of the city in a dream and rebuked them for their cruelty. He said that his name was James and that he was the co-namesake of the holy apostle James, the brother of the Lord in the flesh. The elders told the residents about the vision, and the people realized that they had witnessed the appearance of the holy saint of God.
With repentance and reverence, the Borovichi people accepted the honest relics of the righteous Jacob. A wooden log cabin, similar to a small chapel, was built on the shore of the Msta. The saint's relics were buried there for many decades. Through the prayers of the righteous Jacob, healings were performed, and the glory of the saint's help gradually spread throughout the Novgorod land.
In 1544, the clergy and residents of the Borovichi region appealed to the Novgorod Archbishop Theodosius with a request to open the relics of the saint, since numerous miracles took place at his tomb. In 1545, on the feast day of the Apostle James, the brother of the Lord, the venerable relics of the righteous James were found. Soon, a healing spring opened at the place of their burial, and pious residents built a wooden temple there in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Tenderness".
In the 17th century, His Holiness Patriarch Nikon, aware of the veneration of the righteous James and the miracles performed through his prayers, ordered the saint's relics to be transferred to the Iversky Valdai Monastery. This transfer took place in 1654. Since then, the righteous James of Borovichi has been revered not only as the patron saint of the Borovichi region, but also as a saint especially associated with the Iveron Monastery on Valdai.
Little is known about the earthly life of the righteous Jacob. Church tradition has not preserved reliable information about who his parents were, where he was born, and how his body ended up on an ice floe off the coast of the Msta. But it is precisely this obscurity that makes his image especially touching: the Lord revealed the holy boy to people not through earthly glory or human merits, but through a miracle, repentance and prayerful reverence.
There are many traditions associated with the name of righteous Jacob. The book "The Legend of St. James the Righteous, the Wonderworker of Borovichi", published in St. Petersburg in 1901, contains stories about miracles that occurred through prayers to the saint. The memories of Borovichi residents about the events of the Great Patriotic War have also been preserved. According to legend, at the beginning of the war, righteous Jacob appeared to a pious elder in a dream and told the faithful to walk around the city with his image three times. At night, secretly, fearing persecution from the godless authorities, the faithful made a procession with an icon of the saint and a fragment of his relics. Soon the front approached Borovichi, but the city itself was not destroyed.
Today, the righteous Jacob Borovichi remains the heavenly patron saint of the Borovichi region and a prayer book for all who turn to him with faith. His memory reminds Christians that the Lord reveals His saints in a variety of times and circumstances, and the human heart is called upon to respond to this phenomenon not with fear and indifference, but with repentance, gratitude and prayer.
Righteous James of Borovichi, wonderworker of Novgorod, pray to God for us.
