On October 25, the Orthodox Church commemorates St. Amphilochius of Glushitsky, a disciple and companion of St. Dionysius of Glushitsky. His life became an example of patience, brotherly love, and loyalty to a spiritual mentor.
There is no information about the saint's origin and childhood years. It is known that he began his monastic life in one of the monasteries of Veliky Ustyug, where he was ordained to the priesthood. Having heard about the exploits of St. Dionysius, in 1417 Amphilochius came to the monastery he founded on the Glushitsa River. He was looking for an experienced mentor under whose guidance he could grow in spiritual life.
His life preserved the story of their first meeting. "Father, save me," the monk addressed Dionysius. In a conversation with the abbot and his disciple Macarius, Amphilochius saw humility, simplicity, and piety, which strengthened his desire to remain at the monastery. When he fell at the feet of the elder, the latter lifted him up with the words: "Glory and worship to God alone. He alone can save you and me."
St. Dionysius warned the new disciple about the difficulties of a desert life. Together they made a promise not to be separated until the end of their earthly journey. Amphilochius gladly accepted this covenant and began to diligently fulfill the monastic rule. Prayer, obedience, and daily work filled his days. The special features of the ascetic were the meekness and patience with which he endured trials.
Amphilochius shared his mentor's concerns about the establishment of the monastery, helped him in the labors and management of the growing monastic community. Gradually, he became the closest assistant and spiritual friend of St. Dionysius. They spent twenty years together, serving God and the brethren.
Before his death in 1437, St. Dionysius entrusted the care of the monastery to his beloved disciple. Amphilochius was grieved by the impending separation, but his mentor urged him to continue his ministry and take care of the spiritual growth of the monks. The elder's words about shepherding the flock of Christ "carefully and rightly" became a testament to him for the remaining years.
For another fifteen years, St. Amphilochius continued his labors in the Glushitsky monastery. Remaining faithful to the instructions of his spiritual father, he took care of the brethren and set an example of monastic life. In 1452, the saint peacefully departed to the Lord. According to his will, he was buried in the Sosnovetsky desert next to St. Dionysius.
The life of St. Amphilochius reminds us of the value of loyalty: to God, to accepted service, to the people we are called to take care of. His example helps to see the spiritual meaning of everyday life — patient work, attentive attitude towards others, willingness to learn and accept guidance with love. It is in such daily faithfulness that the Christian life is strengthened.
