Holy Trinity Day, or Pentecost, is one of the most important Orthodox holidays. It is celebrated on the fiftieth day after Easter and reminds believers of the event that marked the beginning of the history of the Church of Christ — the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles.

The holiday ending the Easter cycle
After His Resurrection, the Lord Jesus Christ appeared to the disciples for forty days, strengthening them in faith and instructing them for future ministry. Then the Ascension of the Lord took place. Before Ascension, the Savior promised the apostles that they would soon receive special gracious help from above.
On the fiftieth day after Easter, the disciples of Christ gathered together in Jerusalem. At that moment, a great event took place: the Holy Spirit descended upon them. The Book of Acts of the Apostles says that His coming was accompanied by a noise like a strong wind, and fiery tongues appeared above each of those present. The apostles received the gift of speaking different languages and the opportunity to preach the gospel to the peoples of the world.
That is why Pentecost is often called the birthday of the Church. From that moment on, the apostolic preaching went beyond the narrow circle of disciples and became addressed to all mankind.

Why is the holiday called Trinity?
The name "Pentecost" is associated with the day of celebration — the fiftieth day after the Resurrection of Christ. However, in the Orthodox tradition, this day is also called the Day of the Holy Trinity.
During the Savior's earthly life, God the Son was revealed to people. Through the descent of the Holy Spirit, the action of the Third Person of the Holy Trinity appeared to the world. This is how the fullness of revelation about God became available to man.: God the Father sends the Holy Spirit according to the promise of the Son. Therefore, the holiday glorifies the Most Holy Trinity — the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Green decoration of temples
One of the most recognizable features of the holiday is the temples decorated with greenery and flowers. The floors are covered with fresh grass, the walls and icons are decorated with birch branches, and believers come to worship with flowers.
This tradition has a deep spiritual meaning. Greenery symbolizes life, renewal and the action of the Holy Spirit, Who animates the human soul. Just as nature wakes up in spring after a winter sleep, so man, through the grace of God, receives the opportunity for spiritual rebirth.

Features of worship
The festive service of the Trinity is distinguished by special solemnity. After the Divine Liturgy, Great Vespers is celebrated with the reading of the kneeling prayers of St. Basil the Great. This is the first kneeling after the Easter period, when the Church calls on believers to turn to God with gratitude, repentance and a request for the grace of the Holy Spirit.
The day after Trinity is Holy Spirit Day, a special ecclesiastical celebration dedicated to the glorification of the Third Person of the Holy Trinity.

What does Pentecost teach us?
The event of Pentecost reminds Christians that faith is not limited to knowledge of God or observance of external rites. The Church lives by the action of the Holy Spirit, who strengthens a person in the fight against sin, helps to do good, remain faithful to Christ and bear witness to the Gospel with his life.
The Feast of the Trinity invites every believer to reflect on his own spiritual life. Just as the apostles gained courage and inner strength after the descent of the Holy Spirit, so the modern Christian is called to seek God's gracious help in order to transform his life in accordance with the gospel commandments.
Therefore, Holy Trinity Day is not only a commemoration of an event two thousand years ago, but also a reminder that the Holy Spirit continues to work in the Church and in the hearts of people who are open to God.
