The Bulgarian Orthodox Church marked what would have been the 80th birthday of the late Patriarch Neophyte with a solemn day of remembrance and celebration in Sofia. The event drew clergy, theologians, public figures, and faithful from across the country to honor the spiritual leader's life and legacy.

The day began with a Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of St. Nedelya, led by Bishop Ioan of Branitsa, the first vicar of the Sofia Metropolis, alongside numerous bishops and priests. Following the liturgy, His Holiness Patriarch Daniil presided over a memorial service and Trisagion hymn at the tomb of Patriarch Neophyte, located in the cathedral’s crypt.

In his homily, Patriarch Daniil highlighted the virtues of his predecessor:
"He knew the blessedness of spiritual poverty, meekness, a thirst for righteousness, and peacemaking... and remained a model of humble service and love."

The highlight of the commemorations was the unveiling of a memorial plaque and the official naming of the main hall of Sofia University’s Faculty of Theology in honor of Patriarch Neophyte. Speaking at the ceremony, Patriarch Daniil reminded attendees that Neophyte had been not only a spiritual leader but also a respected academic — serving as rector and the first dean of the Faculty of Theology.

Associate Professor Ivaylo Naydenov, the faculty’s current dean, noted that the name of Patriarch Neophyte would stand as a symbol of the enduring bond between the Church and the university.

As part of the anniversary events, the Bulgarian translation of Neophyte’s doctoral dissertation was presented, along with a new documentary film chronicling his life and ecclesiastical service.

Patriarch Neophyte (born Simeon Dimitrov, 1945–2023) served as the head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church from 2013 until his death in 2023. Before his enthronement, he played a key role in the development of theological education in Bulgaria, holding various academic and episcopal posts, and engaging in international church diplomacy.

He is remembered not only as a pastor and theologian but also as a contributor to the Church’s musical and literary heritage. He worked to restore ties with the Bulgarian diaspora and supported numerous theological and cultural initiatives.

The commemorations served as a powerful reminder of the Church’s cultural and spiritual roots, and of the continued relevance of theology in public life. Organizers and Church leaders expressed hope that Patriarch Neophyte’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
