The Holy Synod of the Antiochian Patriarchate has decided to re-establish communication between the Antiochian Church and the Jerusalem Patriarchate, according to a statement from the Antiochian Church's press service.
The Holy Synod of the Antiochian Church, on October 21, resolved to restore ties with the Jerusalem Patriarchate, which had been severed due to disagreements over the jurisdiction of the territory of Qatar. A special committee was appointed by the Synod to address the disputed issue. This decision comes in response to the difficult situation faced by the Jerusalem Church because of the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
"As current circumstances demand intensified prayers and cooperation, the Holy Synod has resolved to restore the disrupted ecclesiastical relations with the Jerusalem Patriarchate and entrusted the competent committee of the Patriarchate to reach out to the brethren in the Jerusalem Patriarchate to find a resolution to the church dispute concerning ecclesiastical jurisdiction over 'Qatar,' with the aim of preserving the jurisdictional rights of the Antiochian See over it," the statement read following the Synod meeting.
It is reported that the Antiochian Church will also send a church delegation to the capital of Jordan, Amman, to "express support for Antiochian believers in the people of the Jerusalem Patriarchate and to support them in these challenging and critical circumstances." In Amman, there is a monastery and a significant spiritual center of the Jerusalem Orthodox Church.
During the meeting, Antiochian Patriarch John X spoke with the advisor to the Jerusalem Patriarch Theophilos over the phone and "expressed full support for the Antiochian Church in the unjust and barbaric attack on Greek Orthodox Christians at the Monastery of St. Porphyrius in Gaza." Patriarch John requested that Patriarch Theophilos receive "solidarity, support, as well as his condolences regarding the loss of our brethren."
