His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia recorded a video message on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the repose of St. Tikhon, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia.
The restoration of the Patriarchate at the beginning of the last twentieth century coincided with a severe crisis in our country. In the conditions of civil war and devastation, hatred and enmity, the collapse of former foundations and the loss of moral guidelines, the urgent need for a unifying force, for the emergence of a spiritual leader who could become an authority not only for believers, but also to rally the divided strata of society around himself, was especially acute. By God's providence, such a lot fell on St. Tikhon.
Prior to becoming Patriarch, Vladyka Tikhon went through a difficult path associated with serving in Poland, preaching Orthodoxy among Uniates, and then in the United States of America, where his abilities as a missionary and organizer were realized. Even then, given the nature of the North American flock, he tried, in the words of the apostle Paul, to become everything to everyone in order to save at least some (1 Corinthians 9:22).
The saint's talents and spiritual gifts were revealed to an even greater extent when, during the terrible revolutionary events and civil strife, he became the head of the Russian Orthodox Church. Bearing responsibility for the Church, the Patriarch made wise decisions. In some matters of no fundamental importance, he was ready to make a certain compromise with the secular authorities, urged not to take revenge on the persecutors, prayed for reconciliation of the warring parties — all this made it possible to preserve church life as much as possible.
Patriarch Tikhon, who became the helmsman of the Church at a time when its very existence was under threat, managed to walk the "royal path." Undoubtedly, the Lord Himself, the Founder and Head of the Church, helped him to walk this path fearlessly and uncomplainingly, supporting the High Priest and guiding him into all truth (John 16:13).
Through bloodless martyrdom, confession, and fidelity to Christ, even unto death, Saint Tikhon forever inscribed his name in the annals of our Church and country, and now, we believe, he stands before the Throne of the Almighty, praying for us so that we may not be separated from the love of God (Rom. 8:35) in Christ Jesus our Lord (kontakion to the holy One).
