The icon of the Savior the Merciful belongs to the type of icon of the Almighty. On such icons, he appears as the Judge, the central image of the Lord. The first image of the Almighty is dated to about the middle of the XII century. Jesus Christ appears in full growth. His gaze is sad and full of sorrow, but does not condemn. The first appearance of this icon occurred during the spiritual uplift of the people in Russia. The icon has miraculous properties, therefore, many copies have been made from the face of the Lord. On such icons, Jesus Christ is depicted both in full height or sitting, and waist-deep or chest-length.
The most famous list in this style is the icon of the All–Merciful Savior in Tutaev, a chest image of Christ in which he holds an open Gospel in his left hand and raised his right in a blessing gesture. On other copies from the original image of the Almighty, sometimes the scroll replaces the book.
The Icon of the Savior in Tutaev was a famous icon that appeared presumably at the beginning of the XV century for the church of the Russian princes Boris and Gleb, the sons of the great Kiev Prince Vladimir Svyatoslavich. The icon painter Dionysius Glushitsky worked on the shrine. Initially, the icon was located in the dome of the temple, and it was possible to see it only by looking up at the "sky." The icon's dimensions are impressive: 2.78 m wide and 3.20 m high. Therefore, it was a worthy decoration of the dome. The exact weight of the icon is unknown, but at least 30 men are needed to carry it, and at the same time, everyone will feel the weight of the icon.

Every year, a procession is held with the icon, for which a special metal frame is used to make it convenient to carry the shrine. For a short time the icon was in the chapel of Saints Boris and Gleb. It was only in the 18th century that the image appeared in the main hall of the church. But he didn't stay in peace for long. In 1749, the shrine was moved to the bishop's house by the will of Metropolitan Arseny.

In 1798, the image was taken on foot, carrying in his arms, to the Resurrection Cathedral, where it is kept to this day. So the icon ended up in Tutaev, which was called Romanov-Borisoglebsk until 1918. Nowadays, along the path of the image, on one of the banks of the Kovat River, where it was washed from the dust and dirt that settled along the way, there is a holy spring with healing properties. Every year, on the tenth Sunday after Easter, people go to the procession.

This event is a real celebration: the icon of the All-Merciful Savior is solemnly taken out of the Resurrection Cathedral, and a procession accompanies it on its way through the whole city. Such a tradition has existed for many years, even centuries, it seems that time has no power over the shrines and the faith of people. The icon of the Savior in Tutaev began to darken over time, due to the fact that earlier the icons were finished with a layer of sunflower oil to fix the colors. This icon is the only one in the Resurrection Cathedral from which the oil layer has not been removed.

But the face of the Lord is well-read from the icon and seems to look into the soul, exposing it and liberating it. The metal frame used in the Procession has a special device so that men can put it on their shoulders and carry the icon in this way. There are arches in the frame so that believers can walk under the face of God while walking or stopping. As in the old days, the icon is carried uncovered, even in the rain and bad weather.

According to ancient tradition, it is customary to crawl on one's knees through a specially constructed manhole under the image of the Savior.
Every year, due to the transition of worship services, the icon is moved to the summer church in the spring, and to the winter church in the fall.
Traditionally, city processions are held with the image of the Savior. Along Borisoglebskaya Street (right) on the tenth Sunday after Easter (the patronal feast of the Resurrection Cathedral). According to Romanovskaya - on the Sunday before the feast of the Prophet Elijah (August 2).
