Today, in all churches across Greece, prayers are being offered for the cessation of the wildfires and to commemorate those who lost their lives during this natural disaster. Such a decision was made by the Holy Synod of the Greek Church. A special prayer for the elimination of the fires was composed by Metropolitan Chrysostom of Mani, as reported by orthodoxianewsagency.gr.
Following the meeting held on August 24th and 25th, the Holy Synod of the Greek Church called upon the dioceses to aid those affected by the wildfires and expressed gratitude to those who have been selflessly fighting the fires.
"The Holy Synod hastens to thank all those engaged in stopping the fires – the heroic firefighters, pilots of aerial firefighting units, the Greek army, and all volunteers who, from the very first moment, stood against the fire, rescued people, and offered assistance to the afflicted. May the strength and blessings of God remain in their lives and good deeds!" states the circular from the Greek Synod, which was distributed to all dioceses.
The ongoing wildfires in Greece have already been recognized as the largest observed within the EU. This natural disaster began on July 17th, and firefighters and volunteers are still combating the flames. At least 35 people have lost their lives, and the extent of the damage caused by the fires is yet to be fully assessed. Thousands of individuals have been evacuated, many have lost their homes and possessions. Dozens of villages and several Orthodox monasteries have been affected, with many of them situated in forests, making firefighting efforts difficult. Notably, the renowned 10th-century monastery of Osios Loukas, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, was also affected. The Greek government has already allocated funds for its restoration.
