A second Orthodox parish dedicated to St. John of Shanghai has been founded in the city of Pau, southwestern France. According to the Diocese of Western Europe, the parish's establishment responds to the requests of the faithful and the need to strengthen missionary work in the region.
The parish will be led by Archpriest Quentin de Castelbajac, rector of the church in Lyon. Pastoral care of the community has been entrusted to Priest Bogdan Babenko, who has been serving in France for several years. Efforts are currently underway to secure a location for worship services.
The existing parish in Pau, dedicated to St. Alexander Nevsky, continues its activities, although the church is temporarily closed for renovations. Services will resume once the work is completed.
The history of Orthodoxy in Pau dates back to the 1860s when the city became a popular resort for Russian travelers. In 1866, the Alexander Nevsky Church was consecrated, becoming the third Russian parish in France. Although the resort's popularity declined over time, the church has been preserved thanks to state support and donations.
