On February 18, 2025, in the capital of Myanmar, Naypyidaw, an agreement was signed granting permission for the religious activities of the Parish of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Southeast Asia of the Russian Orthodox Church. This was reported by the Patriarchal Exarchate of Southeast Asia.
The document was signed by representatives of the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture, the Department of Religious Affairs, and the Orthodox parish. The ceremony was attended by Myanmar’s Minister of Religious Affairs and Culture, U Tin U Lwin, Russia’s Ambassador to Myanmar I.K. Azizov, Patriarchal Exarch of Southeast Asia Metropolitan Sergey, and staff from the Russian diplomatic mission.
Minister U Tin U Lwin emphasized that the decision to approve the activities of the Moscow Patriarchate in the country was initiated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. In turn, Metropolitan Sergey thanked the leadership of Myanmar and noted that the event is especially significant in the year marking the 77th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Myanmar.
According to him, the future Orthodox church in Yangon will not only be a spiritual center but also an architectural gem of the city, with its golden domes symbolizing the friendship between the two nations.
