The Publishing House of the Moscow Patriarchate has issued an Akathist to the Venerable Alexander Peresvet and Andrei Oslyaba of Radonezh.
Alexander Peresvet and Andrei Oslyabya remain in the centuries-old national memory as valiant warriors who, in the prime of their lives, became monks and, with the blessing of St. Sergius of Radonezh, again went out to military service to lay down their lives for their friends, for the Fatherland.
The Akathist to the Holy warrior monks was approved by the Holy Synod on December 27, 2023. In the brochure of serial design, its text is printed in large civilian font and supplemented with the lives of the venerable and a small dictionary.
Alexander Peresvet and Andrey Oslyabya are heroes of the Battle of Kulikovo, whom the Orthodox Church remembers on September 20.
Alexander Radonezhsky (Peresvet) He was a boyar, an experienced warrior who took monastic vows from St. Sergius of Radonezh. Andrei Radonezhsky (Oslyabya) is also a boyar and an experienced warrior. Both warrior monks were given to help Prince Dimitri Donskoy on the eve of the Battle of Kulikovo, along with a blessing for the battle.
At the beginning of the battle, a heroic battle took place, in which Alexander Peresvet represented the Russians, and the Tatar-Mongols were represented by the hero Chelubey (Temir—murza). Both heroes were on horseback and struck with spears with such force that they immediately killed each other. The draw of the match inspired the Russian armies and became the key to their historic victory.
After the battle, the body of the Monk Alexander Peresvet was buried near the church in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Stary Simonov. The body of St. Andrew Oslyabi was also laid nearby.
Both warrior monks were canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church. Their memorial day is celebrated on September 7 (20).
