The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church has appointed Bishop Konstantin (Ostrovsky) of Zaraisk as acting Patriarchal Exarch of Africa instead of Metropolitan Leonid (Gorbachev) of Klin. This was announced at the end of the Synod by the head of the synodal department of the Moscow Patriarchate for relations of the Church with society and the media, Vladimir Legoyda, a video of his statement was distributed by the synodal department.
"In connection with the report of His Grace Metropolitan Leonid of Klin received by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia with a statement of the reasons preventing him from fulfilling his duties as Patriarchal Exarch of Africa, release Metropolitan Leonid of Klin from this position with gratitude for the work he has done and with the preservation of his temporary administration of the Yerevan-Armenian Diocese. To appoint His Grace Bishop Konstantin of Zaraisk as the acting Patriarchal Exarch of Africa," Legoyda said.
The Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa was established in December 2021 by the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church. The resolution clarified that this was done due to the deviation of Patriarch Theodore of Alexandria into the schism, his commemoration at the liturgy of the head of the schismatic Orthodox Church of Ukraine (PCU) Epiphany Dumenko and joint ministry with him. After that, a number of priests from Africa appealed to the ROC with a request to accept them into the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate.
The Patriarchal exarch of Africa since its creation has been Metropolitan Leonid of Klin.
