The holy relics of two of Romania’s most revered spiritual elders, Elders Paisie (Olaru) and Cleopa (Ilie), were ceremonially unearthed at Sihăstria Monastery, marking a deeply significant moment for the Romanian Orthodox Church. The remains, carefully exhumed from the monastery cemetery, were placed in special reliquaries in preparation for public veneration.
The event was led by Bishop Veniamin of Southern Bessarabia and Bishop Nichifor of Botoșani, vicar of the Iași Archdiocese. Following the Divine Liturgy, the relics were carried in a solemn procession and enshrined in the monastery’s main church, where they will remain accessible to pilgrims and faithful.
Elders Paisie and Cleopa, officially canonized by the Holy Synod in July 2024, will be locally glorified on August 7, 2025. Their feast day has been designated as December 2. This year, the Romanian Orthodox Church is observing the "Year of the Spiritual Fathers and Confessors of the 20th Century" — a special designation in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Romanian Patriarchate. Several canonizations and uncoverings of relics have already taken place as part of the commemorations.
Both elders served as spiritual fathers at Sihăstria Monastery, a key center of Romanian Orthodox monasticism. They are venerated as enduring beacons of faith who preserved the spirit of Orthodoxy through the harsh years of communist persecution.
Fr. Paisie (Olaru) (1897–1990) was known for his deep humility, gentle manner, and gift for spiritual consolation. Living in a forest hermitage, he welcomed hundreds of pilgrims seeking guidance and prayer.
Fr. Cleopa (Ilie) (1912–1998), former abbot of Sihăstria, became one of the most influential Orthodox voices in 20th-century Romania. His preaching and spiritual counsel reached not only monastics but also lay believers. His books and recorded teachings continue to inspire Orthodox Christians around the world.
