Metropolitan Mercury of Rostov and Novocherkassk led a memorial service for residents of Rostov-on-Don who died as a result of a drone attack and the aftermath of a powerful storm. The panikhida was held at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rostov-on-Don, according to the website of the Rostov Diocese.

Regional officials, clergy members, and local residents took part in the prayers. Before the service, Metropolitan Mercury called on the faithful to support the families of those killed and injured, share in their grief, and provide whatever assistance they could.

“Through sharing in the sorrow of our neighbors, mutual support, and care for one another, true humanity and the unity of the people are preserved, while Christian responsibility and dignity are revealed,” the metropolitan said.

The Rostov region has faced several emergencies in recent days. On July 25, the area was hit by a severe storm accompanied by heavy rain and thunderstorms. Falling trees and damaged infrastructure left one person dead, dozens injured, and caused disruptions to electricity and water supplies in several districts.

On the night of July 27, Rostov Region was targeted in a large-scale drone attack. According to regional authorities, five people were killed in Rostov-on-Don, including a child, while several others were injured. Drone debris damaged residential buildings, public facilities, and vehicles.

Following the memorial service, Metropolitan Mercury urged residents not to remain indifferent to the suffering of others and to assist those facing hardship.

“Help can be expressed through material support, a kind word, care, and prayer,” he said.

Authorities are continuing to assess the damage and carry out restoration work at affected buildings in Rostov-on-Don. Assistance is being provided to residents whose homes were damaged in the incidents.
