On October 8, 2025, an attempted forcible entry occurred at the Economic Building of the Pochaev Lavra, one of Ukraine’s most prominent Orthodox monasteries, located in Ternopil Oblast. According to the Union of Orthodox Journalists, the confrontation involved Ukrainian Orthodox Church seminarians and law enforcement officers, escalating into a physical altercation.

Eyewitnesses from the monastery reported that unidentified individuals, accompanied by police, cut the locks on the monastery gates and tried to enter the premises. The seminary students and monastic brotherhood reportedly responded quickly, pushing the intruders outside the Lavra’s grounds.

Ukrainian media later quoted the National Police and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) as saying the presence of security forces was related to “investigative activities.” Vasyl Ilchyshyn, head of the Kremenets-Pochaev State Historical and Architectural Reserve and one of the individuals present during the incident, dismissed the event as a "staged provocation for propaganda purposes" but did not explain why authorities chose not to use the official entrance.

Following the clash, Ukrainian police opened a criminal case against worshippers on charges of “obstructing the work of law enforcement,” according to Russian news agency TASS. Monastery representatives claim they received threats that authorities would return with reinforcements, and they are now calling for prayerful support from the faithful.

The Pochaev Lavra is one of the most significant Orthodox monastic centers in Ukraine. It is currently operated by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) under a lease agreement valid until 2052. In recent years, however, Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture has actively sought to transfer the Lavra to full state control, fueling escalating tensions between the Church and government authorities.

This latest incident is part of a broader pattern of church-state conflict in Ukraine, where disputes over religious jurisdiction, property rights, and ecclesiastical loyalty have intensified since the establishment of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) and its recognition by the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
