Over the past 15 years, 140 new churches have been built in Moscow, which can accommodate almost 100,000 people. This was announced by Vladimir Resin, deputy of the Russian State Duma and Patriarchal Adviser on the Program for the Construction of new churches in the capital, at a conference dedicated to the anniversary of the "200 Program", which took place on January 29, 2025 at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

The program, which started in 2008, led to the creation of a number of new religious buildings, including both capital temples and temporary ones. New churches have opened in Moscow this year, which can accommodate another 7,500 people. During the implementation of the project, almost 100,000 Muscovites were given the opportunity to visit churches within walking distance from their homes.

As Vladimir Resin noted, this project has become a symbol of Russia's spiritual rebirth and the strengthening of traditional values. "The successes of the capital have inspired the implementation of similar programs in other regions, and the initiative itself has become a symbol of the revival of spirituality," he stressed.

In addition, Metropolitan Nikander of Vladimir and Suzdal, head of the Financial and Economic Department of the Russian Orthodox Church, noted that by the end of the 20th century, Moscow was in last place in terms of the number of churches among Russian cities. "Sometimes there was not a single functioning church for every 100-200 thousand people," said His Eminence. It was only thanks to the initiative of His Holiness the Patriarch and the support of the government that Moscow began large-scale construction of religious sites.

The program is not limited only to the construction of temples. Sunday schools, clubs, sports clubs, and charity services are opening with each new church. It is important to note that social programs such as "Moscow Longevity" are also being implemented on the basis of the parishes, and the church provides assistance to hospitals, orphanages, nursing homes and prisons.

In 2025, the program plans to complete 14 more temple complexes, of which at least 10 will be commissioned. To date, work is underway on 43 construction sites, 13 more parishes are being prepared for construction, and 18 projects are under development.
