In the capital of Laos, Vientiane, regular Orthodox services will now take place as a house church dedicated to Saint Alexander Nevsky has been recently arranged. According to the Patriarchal Exarchate of Southeast Asia, the first divine services were held in the new church on February 4, the day of the Synaxis of the New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church.
Previously, Orthodox liturgies in Vientiane were conducted either at the Russian House or at the Russian Center for Science and Culture.
In October, Metropolitan Sergey of Singapore and Southeast Asia, the Patriarchal Exarch of Southeast Asia, visited the Lao People's Democratic Republic. During the visit, he had a meeting with Khanonglit Sisomboun, the Director of the Department of Religious Affairs of the Lao Front. The discussions covered the prospects of further cooperation and various issues related to the activities of the Orthodox parish in Vientiane.
The Patriarchal Exarchate of Southeast Asia was established five years ago in 2018. Over the years, clergy from the Exarchate have been serving in thirteen countries within the five-hour time zones and four eparchies: Singapore, Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines-Vietnam. The parishes are located in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, East Timor, Papua New Guinea, North Korea, South Korea, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, and Vietnam. The Exarchate currently oversees 83 parishes with 72 clergy members.
