On May 8, 2026, Metropolitan Eugene consecrated the first fragments of the large-scale sculptural composition "Cathedral of Archangel Michael", which arrived in the capital of the Urals the day before from the workshop of Nizhny Novgorod.
A unique monument is being built in the Archangel Michael sports quarter and will be a gift to the city from the Russian Copper Company. The installation of details of the future monument has already begun.
One of the first items brought to Yekaterinburg from a workshop in Nizhny Novgorod was a huge bronze ball — about two meters in diameter, weighing more than two tons. When it is installed on the pedestal, the ball will be covered with gilding. According to the author, the ball symbolizes the universe, and the eight archangels, led by Archangel Michael, will seem to hover over the world. The whole structure will be held on hidden fasteners.
— We see how God helps — everything happens from a good thought, from a good intention to the completion of a deed. Quite recently, Igor Alekseevich Altushkin shared his good intention to glorify Archangel Michael by restoring churches, beautifying people's places of life, and installing such a sculptural composition," said Metropolitan Evgeny. — Today we can already see that this composition is being built. All that remains is to assemble it carefully, assemble it and ask the angels and archangels to stand guard over our city and our God-preserved Russia. Let everything work out!
According to the Holy Scriptures, Archangel Michael is the archangel— the leader of the heavenly host. He represents a higher power that crushes evil. That is why he is often depicted on icons in armor, armed with a sword.
In a broad sense, the image of the saint symbolizes the struggle against any lawlessness and the victory of goodness. And the word "cathedral" in this case does not mean a temple, but a gathering or gathering of archangels, which will be reflected in the sculpture.
The author of the sculptural composition "Cathedral of Archangel Michael" is Alexey Shchitov, a member of the Union of Artists of Russia. His monumental sculptures are located all over Russia.
In terms of height, the monument will be one of the tallest Orthodox monuments in Russia – about 16 meters. Today, one of the tallest Orthodox monuments is the statue of Prince Vladimir on Borovitskaya Square in Moscow. Its height is 17.5 meters.
