On the night of January 30, 2025, on the feast day of St. Anthony the Great, Archbishop Theophan of Korea held the All-Night Vigil and Divine Liturgy at the Church of St. Anthony the Great in the Incheon Monastery. Father Pavel (Choi) served alongside the Archbishop. This was the first patronal feast of the church, which the monastery's brethren had established in 2024, according to the press service of the Korean Diocese.
After the service, Archbishop Theophan congratulated the parishioners on the first patronal feast of the newly founded monastery and wished it prosperity.
The Incheon Monastery was established in early 2024. Archbishop Theophan and Hierodeacon Nektarios rented a private house, and on the property, they set up a cabin purchased with donations from the parishioners. A domestic church was arranged in this small building. The monastery’s brethren prepared the church for services with their own efforts. The Great Consecration took place in June 2024.
According to Archbishop Theophan, the monastery is necessary not only for the monks but also for the laity, to whom it can serve as a spiritual guide. The first service in the church took place on the Eve of the Feast of Theophany, when several Orthodox families from the surrounding areas came to the monastery.
The Korean Diocese was established in 2018 as part of the Patriarchal Exarchate of South-East Asia. Currently, its jurisdiction includes five parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church: one in North Korea and four in the South. The diocese is headed by Archbishop Theophan of Korea (Kim), the first Korean to become an Orthodox bishop. He recently published a book about the mission of the Russian Church among the Koreans, detailing the Russian spiritual mission in Korea that operated from 1900 to 1949.
