On September 1, 2024, on the twentieth anniversary of the terrorist attack at Beslan School No. 1, Archbishop Gerasim of Vladikavkaz and Alan celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Beslan.
At the end of the Liturgy, Archbishop Gerasim addressed the faithful with an archpastoral address. "Today is a special day for our Alan land, a day of mourning and mourning. Today is the twentieth anniversary of the terrible terrorist act that took place on this earth. Our land is abundantly watered with the blood of innocent children and their parents, employees of special units who participated in the release of hostages. This day is especially holy for us. For twenty years we have been gathering here to pray for all those innocently killed and ask the Lord for forgiveness for the fact that we overlooked and missed somewhere, did not give love and attention to those people who passed away in those terrible days of early September 2004," the bishop said, in particular.
Metropolitan Mark donated to the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Beslan the relics of the Holy Martyrs Grand Duchess Elisaveta and Nun Barbara. "Today we heard the words of the Apostle Paul: "God has judged us, the last messengers, to be, as it were, condemned to death" (1 Cor. 4:9). The "death eaters" that the world laughs at and mocks. We Christians consider our short-term stay on this earth as "death eaters" who expect the end of their lives at any moment. These "death eaters" have been the conquerors of death in all ages. One can be victorious only in the name of Christ. When Christ lives in us and we live in Him, then we can be victorious over the evil that reigns in the world. The evil that happened here could only have happened at the hands of people who retreated long ago and far from God, not remembering that "God is love" (1 John 4:16). God is peace, and we cannot call anything victory except victory over sin and death. All of us who have received communion today are growing into this face of the victors over death. Therefore, when we pray for our dead and especially for those who have suffered, we know that they are with Christ, and they cannot wish for better. I hope that you will keep the memory of those who died here and gave their lives for our common life in Christ. I am glad that you have created such a temple here. I wish you success in further decorating it!" said Bishop Mark, addressing the participants of the service.
Thousands of people came to the walls of the Beslan school to honor the memory of the victims.
Archbishop Gerasim and Metropolitan Mark celebrated a requiem mass for the dead in the gym of School No. 1, at the site of the mass death of hostages.
After the service, Bishop Gerasim said: "Today we pray that the Lord will wipe away every tear of every person who came here. It is also our prayer that in the very depths of the grief in which we are immersed, we may find solace in Christ Jesus. The Lord came into the world to save us all from sin, death and an ancient curse. Today we are gathered in the name of Christ to pray for our loved ones who left us prematurely, so that they may find peace in heaven. I believe that it is so. Christ is present here, Crucified on the Cross and Resurrected."
Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Republic of Alania Albina Playeva and Minister of Culture of the Republic of Alania Soslan Fidarov donated an icon of the Holy Children of Bethlehem from the President of the Russian Federation V.V. Putin to the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Beslan.
Archbishop Gerasim expressed gratitude to Vladimir Putin for the gift and for "kneeling here and praying for all those innocently killed."
