On October 26, Syria's acting president, Ahmed al-Shara, visited the Orthodox Assumption Cathedral in the Old City of Damascus. Following a religious service, he held a meeting with His Beatitude Patriarch John X of Antioch and All the East at the Patriarchal residence, according to Syrian state news agency SANA.

During the meeting, Patriarch John X briefed President al-Shara on the current situation of the Christian community in Syria and the ongoing efforts of the Antiochian Orthodox Church to support all citizens across the country. Both parties emphasized the importance of strengthening national values and fostering unity among the Syrian people, regardless of religious affiliation.

Patriarch John also addressed the tragic events of June 22, when a terrorist attack at the Church of Prophet Elijah in Damascus resulted in the deaths of dozens of people. He expressed deep concerns over the safety of Christians in the country, urging the Syrian government to take stronger measures to protect believers. "We have extended our hand to help build a new Syria. Unfortunately, we are still waiting for you to see it," the Patriarch said, addressing the president.

This marks the first official visit by Ahmed al-Shara to the Patriarch of Antioch since assuming office at the end of 2024. Prior to this, a meeting between the two took place on August 16 at the presidential palace in Damascus.
