A court in Kyiv has ruled that the Ukrainian Orthodox Church community must dismantle the Volodymyr-Olgyne chapel of the Desyatynna Monastery. This decision comes after two years of efforts to remove the chapel, categorized as an "unauthorized construction" by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine. The chapel was built within the buffer zone of UNESCO monuments, where construction is prohibited.

The Desyatynna Monastery stands on the historical site of the first cathedral of Kyivan Rus - the Desyatynna Church. It was constructed in the 10th century by the order of Saint Prince Volodymyr. The Desyatynna Church, named for the tithe (tenth) of the prince's income that supported it, holds historical and religious significance. The original Desyatynna Church was destroyed in the 17th century, and several churches were subsequently erected on the site, with the last one being demolished in 1936.

The history of the monastery dates back to 2006 when, for the first time in 70 years after the last Desyatynna Church's destruction, a religious service was conducted on the site. The main temple of the monastery was also constructed, financed by donations from Kyiv residents and blessed by His Beatitude Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine Volodymyr. The temple was consecrated in honor of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Volodymyr, the Baptizer of Rus', and his predecessor, Princess Olga, the first of the Rus' rulers to embrace Christianity. In 2009, the Desyatynna Monastery was officially opened, with Archimandrite Hedeon (Kharon) serving as its first hegumen.

Since 2020, the National Museum of the History of Ukraine has sought the removal of the Volodymyr-Olgyne chapel, labeling it as an "unauthorized construction." The chapel was erected on the site of the Desyatynna Church, the first cathedral of Kyivan Rus'.

In February, the Economic Court of Kyiv, in response to the museum's and the Ministry of Culture's lawsuit, ruled that the chapel must be dismantled, and the land plot must be restored to its previous condition. The demolition is expected to be carried out at the expense of the religious community.
