The Romanian Orthodox Church has responded to Pope Francis' proposal regarding changing the date of Easter. The Holy Synod of the Romanian Church emphasized that any modification to the common date of Easter can only be made after a Pan-Orthodox Council.

In a statement published on the website of the Romanian Church, it was clarified that “following the recent statement by Pope Francis regarding the establishment of a common date for the Resurrection of the Lord, we make it clear that any consultations concerning the date of Easter and any possible decisions can only take place within the framework of a future Pan-Orthodox Council with the participation of all sister Orthodox Churches.”

The document also refers to the decision of the Synaxis of Patriarchs and Representatives of the Orthodox Churches, which took place in January 2016 in Chambésy. At that time, the following resolution was adopted:

"Each Church must be free to implement in practice what it considers appropriate for the spiritual formation of its faithful, but without changing the date of the common Easter celebration by all Orthodox Christians."

Thus, the Romanian Church stresses that a unified Easter date for Orthodox Christians can only be reconsidered at a Pan-Orthodox Council, rather than through bilateral or interfaith agreements.

In 2025, Easter falls on the same date in both the Julian and Gregorian calendars. This week, Pope Francis called on Christians to take advantage of this occasion to introduce a unified Easter date.

Historically, the issue of unifying the Easter date has been discussed multiple times. In 1975, the World Council of Churches proposed considering an astronomically accurate method for determining Easter, but this did not gain widespread approval. In 1997, an interfaith conference in Aleppo also discussed the possibility of establishing a single date, but many Orthodox Churches approached the initiative cautiously. Later, the Synaxis of Patriarchs and Representatives of Orthodox Churches, which met from January 21-28, 2016, at the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s Center in Chambésy, ruled that each Church should determine the date of Easter independently.
