A delegation from the Kemerovo Orthodox Theological Seminary has completed the first part of a fraternal visit to the Montenegro-Littoral Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church, combining liturgical, educational and cultural activities.
The delegation, headed by seminary rector Priest Andrei Moyarenko, spent a week in Montenegro attending services and cultural events, meeting Metropolitan Joanikije of Montenegro and the Littoral, and conducting practical classes in Russian Orthodox church singing for students at the Cetinje Theological Seminary.
A central part of the visit was a series of seminars on the history and traditions of Russian Orthodox sacred music. Teachers from the Kemerovo Seminary introduced Cetinje students to the development of Russian choral traditions and demonstrated several liturgical hymns in practice.
The students of the Cetinje Seminary, in turn, presented the visitors with the distinctive features of Serbian church singing and introduced them to the musical heritage of prominent Serbian composers, including Stevan Mokranjac and Nenad Barački.
On September 30, the Russian delegation was received by Metropolitan Joanikije. Their discussions focused on the life of Orthodox communities in Russia and Montenegro, as well as prospects for further cooperation between theological educational institutions in the two countries. The metropolitan expressed hope that contacts between the Russian and Serbian Orthodox Churches would continue to develop.
The program also included a visit to the St. Sava Gymnasium in Podgorica, where the delegation met with school administrators and students. The Russian representatives additionally took part in a presentation of the literary series Russian Writers on Orthodoxy, organized by the Union of Writers of Russia.
Cooperation between the Kemerovo and Cetinje theological seminaries has continued for more than a decade. The institutions regularly organize joint events and exchange academic experience, teachers and students. Beginning with the new academic year, the Kemerovo Seminary has also enrolled Ioann Danilov-Damjanović, a graduate of the Cetinje Seminary from Mojkovac.
Organizers said such exchanges help preserve and develop longstanding cultural and spiritual ties between Russia and Montenegro while strengthening cooperation between the Russian and Serbian Orthodox Churches.
