The Church of the Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky in Krasnoe Selo was founded in 1897 by Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich Romanov in memory of his recently deceased brother, Emperor Alexander III, and dedicated to his patron saint.
Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich was the commander-in-chief of the troops of the Guard and the St. Petersburg Military District. Therefore, it is no coincidence that the project of the church in the neo-Russian style belongs to the military engineer Colonel Vladimir Kolankovsky. The church belonged to the military department and was assigned to the Krasnoselsky military hospital. The church's parishioners were officials of the military hospital and garrison, as well as local residents of nearby Kolomenskaya and Fabrichnaya Sloboda.
After the revolution of 1917, the church became a parish church. In 1932, the Alexander Nevsky Church was closed and transferred to a neighboring military unit for a utility room.
During the Great Patriotic War, Krasnoe Selo found itself in the occupation zone. At the request of local residents, the German command allowed the church to be opened, which operated in 1942-1943. After the war, the Alexander Nevsky Church remained the only one not destroyed in the area, and parishioners succeeded in reopening it. In 1947, the church was renovated and rededicated. The wooden three-tiered iconostasis with a gilded royal gate was brought from the destroyed Alexander Nevsky Church in the village of Alexandrovka. Icons of the XVIII-XIX centuries have been preserved in the iconostasis. Most of the icons in the church were brought by parishioners at different times. One of the most revered shrines is a small image of the righteous Simeon the God-Receiver with the Christ child in his arms, a rare iconography. This icon was moved from the destroyed Trinity Church of Krasny Selo.
From 1960 to 1970, Archpriest Mikhail Gundyaev, father of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, was rector of the Church of the Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky in Krasnoye Selo.
In 1995, the temple was included in the list of historical and cultural heritage sites as an architectural monument of federal significance.
A full-scale restoration of the church took place from 2020 to 2025 under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. Specialists from the Russian Museum and the Academy of Arts were engaged in the restoration of temple icons.
