Orthodox believers took part in the annual “March for Life” in Munich on April 18, joining thousands of participants from across Germany in a demonstration advocating for the protection of unborn life.

The event, now in its fifth year, brought together Christians of various denominations as well as civic organizations. According to police estimates, up to 4,500 people attended the march, which traditionally began at Königsplatz before proceeding through the city streets.

Participants from the Berlin and German Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia marched as a distinct group, carrying crosses, banners, and icons while accompanying the procession with prayers and Easter hymns.

Bishop Job of Stuttgart, a hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia, addressed the crowd and led the Orthodox column. He highlighted the spiritual dimension of the event, thanking attendees for what he described as their Christian witness to the value of life.

The march also drew significant participation from Catholic communities, including clergy, families, and young people, as well as representatives of Protestant churches and pro-life organizations. German Catholic sources noted the broad ecumenical nature of the gathering.

Among the speakers was public figure Matthias von Gersdorff, who warned of what he called a growing “culture of death” in Germany, particularly in attitudes toward unborn children. A message of support was also delivered by Rainer Maria Woelki, who emphasized that “every person is a beloved child of God.”

Despite its largely peaceful atmosphere, the march was met by counter-demonstrators advocating for abortion rights. Protesters on both sides exchanged chants and accusations, though no major incidents were reported.

Organizers described the event as a continued effort to promote the dignity of human life and traditional family values in contemporary society.
