On December 23, 2024, Patriarch John X of Antioch and All the East met with a group of judges from Damascus and its surrounding areas. The meeting, held at the Church of the Holy Cross, focused on the current challenges and future steps for drafting a new Syrian Constitution, according to the Antioch Patriarchate's press service.
The participants emphasized that the Constitution should serve as the foundation of the rule of law, protecting the structure of society as a whole rather than the interests of specific groups. The vital role of the judiciary in building a state grounded in justice and the rule of law was also highlighted.
Special attention was given to the participation of Christians in shaping the new Constitution. Patriarch John X stressed that Christians are an integral part of Syrian society and that their contribution should benefit the entire nation.
The discussion underscored the importance of civil partnership between Christians and Muslims. This cooperation, according to the Patriarch, strengthens the shared identity of Syrians and helps preserve civil peace.
Earlier, on December 15, in his sermon, Patriarch John X emphasized the need for unity within society and warned against division caused by rumors and fear. He stated that the new Constitution must reflect the interests of all citizens, ensure equality before the law, uphold collective and individual freedoms, and respect human rights.
The Syrian transitional government recently announced the suspension of the Constitution and parliament to review the country’s foundational documents. Amid these developments, Patriarch John X expressed hope that Christmas would be a time of renewal and hope for all Syrians.
