The Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem convened under the chairmanship of Patriarch Theophilos III to discuss the situation of Christian communities in the region amid ongoing war and heightened tensions in the Middle East.
According to a statement from the Patriarchate, church leaders prayed for an end to hostilities and urged believers to remain steadfast in their faith and not abandon their homeland. The hierarchs stressed the importance of maintaining a Christian presence in the Holy Land, particularly in Jerusalem and other cities across the region.
The meeting took place against the backdrop of escalating tensions between Israel and Iran. In recent weeks, missile attacks and military operations have affected daily life in Jerusalem. Access to major religious sites — including the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the Western Wall — has periodically been restricted due to security concerns.
Media reports indicate that tourists and pilgrims have largely disappeared from the Old City of Jerusalem. Many shops and religious institutions have closed, and police patrols have increased in the area. In some neighborhoods, debris from intercepted rockets has reportedly fallen, though major damage has so far been avoided.
During the session, the Synod also discussed measures to support the continued presence of Christians in the Holy Land and addressed relations with other Orthodox and Christian churches. Church leaders emphasized the importance of carefully managing the Patriarchate’s sacred sites and property.
The meeting concluded with renewed prayers for peace in the Middle East and for the safety of the region’s residents. The hierarchs noted that war brings suffering to all peoples and threatens the stability of the entire region.
