On September 1, 2025, a solemn liturgy was held at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Great Martyr Nedelya in Sofia to mark the beginning of the indiction—the new church year according to the Orthodox calendar. The service was led by Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniel.

His Holiness was assisted by the vicar bishops, Ioann of Branitsa and Isaac of Velbuzhd, along with the clergy of the cathedral and deacons. The choir, conducted by Professor Miroslav Popsavov, performed the hymns.

Following the liturgy, Patriarch Daniel addressed the faithful with an archpastoral message. He emphasized that the new church year should be a time of "diligent prayer, repentance, and acts of mercy." "Our faith is not an abstraction or a theory, but the very principle of existence. It is genuine only when expressed in the purity of thoughts and in active love for people, especially for the suffering and oppressed," the Patriarch noted.

He urged the faithful to regularly attend church, engage in repentance, and participate in the Eucharist: "Through the Divine Liturgy and Holy Communion, Christ is truly present in us and among us. Thus, we become a living God-human community—a people of God." He expressed hope that the coming year would be a time of "unity and consensus in Christ."

The beginning of the church year (indiction) is celebrated on September 1 in the Orthodox Church according to the church calendar. However, due to differences in calendar usage, this date falls on different days in the civil calendar: in those churches that follow the New Julian or Gregorian calendar (such as the Constantinople, Bulgarian, and Greek Churches), the feast is observed on September 1. In contrast, the Russian, Serbian, and Jerusalem Churches, which maintain the Julian calendar, celebrate the beginning of the indiction on September 14 according to the new style.
