In the mid-2000s, a group of lay people united around the St. Tikhon Zadonsky Orthodox School put forward an initiative to install worship crosses on roads at the entrances to Tver. The initiative was supported by Archbishop Viktor (Oleinik) of Tver and Kashinsky. The main executor of the idea was Boris Dmitriev, director of the Cedar company. Crosses were installed at the entrances from St. Petersburg, Rzhev, Bezhetsk and Moscow.
The motive that prompted the installation of crosses was the desire to protect the holy city of Tver and the roads around it with the power of the Honest and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord, to remind residents and guests of Tver about the Orthodox identity of the Tver land.
In August 2024, the cross from Moscow was replaced due to dilapidation. On September 1, Metropolitan Ambrose of Tver and Kashinsky performed the rite of consecration of the new cross of worship.
Benefactors and trustees attended the consecration of the cross of worship.
The Cross of Worship is installed on the M10 highway at the entrance to Tver from the village of Emmaus.
After the consecration of the cross of worship, Metropolitan Ambrose addressed those participating in the consecration:
We live in a perishable world, so everything that is made of temporary materials has a custom of decaying. But we, the people, live on and must continue to create. And today, in place of the dilapidated cross, there is a new sign of the cross — as a sign of faith of the people who live on this earth, as a shrine that overshadows on all four sides all those people who pass by in one direction and the other, and as, I repeat, evidence that our Tver land is Orthodox. It is the worship crosses that should remind you of this. Someone may be passing by with some kind of cold heart, someone does not notice the cross. But in fact, the installation of crosses has a deep spiritual meaning. People of other religions, when they try to settle the land, immediately set up their religious signs, thereby emphasizing that this is their land. Our land is Orthodox. And may it continue to be so."
The archpastor presented the episcopal letters to the persons whose care the cross was made and installed.
