A memorial service was held in Sofia on October 15 to honor the late Patriarch Neophyte, former head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, on the 81st anniversary of his birth.

The memorial service took place at his grave near the Cathedral of St. Nedelya and was led by the current head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Daniel, according to the church’s official website.

Clergy, representatives of Sofia University’s Faculty of Theology, university lecturers and students, staff of the Sofia Metropolitanate, and Orthodox faithful attended the service. Participants prayed for the repose of Neophyte’s soul and paid tribute to his contribution to the life of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

Patriarch Neophyte, born Simeon Dimitrov Dimitrov on October 15, 1945, was elected Patriarch of Bulgaria and Metropolitan of Sofia in 2013. He led the Bulgarian Orthodox Church until his death in March 2024.

During his years of service, Neophyte became one of the most prominent figures in Bulgaria’s religious life. His work focused on spiritual education, preserving church traditions, and strengthening the role of Orthodox Christianity in society.

He was widely known for his reserved demeanor, gentle character, and commitment to peace and harmony.

Neophyte died on March 13, 2024, at the age of 78, following a prolonged illness. He was buried near Sofia’s Cathedral of St. Nedelya, where the memorial service was held in his honor.

The anniversary provided an opportunity for the faithful and members of the church community to remember his spiritual leadership and lasting contribution to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.
