The bishop lived on the Holy Mountain for 75 years and headed the Athos Church Academy for more than two decades.
On October 1, 2025, Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Rhodes, who was called one of the most respected and educated hierarchs of our time, passed away on Mount Athos.
Metropolitan Chrysostomos lived on Mount Athos for 75 years, starting in 1950, laboring in the cell of All Saints, which is under the administration of the Great Lavra. In 1978, by the decision of the Patriarch of Constantinople, he was ordained bishop in order to administer the sacraments for monastic fraternities.
Despite his episcopal rank, Metropolitan Chrysostom led a simple life: he wore his vestments and episcopal attributes only during divine services, and in everyday life he was no different from ordinary monks. His cell was filled only with books, and Vladyka gave all the mitres and vestments given to him to other bishops.
As a professor and long-term director of the Athonite Church Academy "Athoniada", he left a significant spiritual and scientific legacy. At his own expense, the metropolitan restored ancient churches and helped build new ones.
The funeral of the archpastor was completed on October 2 at the monastery cemetery of the Great Lavra. The service was attended by three archbishops, hegumens of Athos monasteries, many monks and clergy, as well as current students of the Athoniade, who prayerfully said goodbye to their mentor.
At the end of the memorial service, the clergy emphasized in their parting words that Metropolitan Chrysostomos had been a true saint of Mount Athos all his life. He was calm and did not want to be showered with praises as the only archbishop living on Mount Athos.
The Athonite brothers especially noted his humility, learning and sanctity of life, calling Vladyka a true ascetic of Mount Athos.
He died in his monastic cell at the age of 92 after the Liturgy.
