Israel has created a new diplomatic post aimed at strengthening ties with Christian communities worldwide, appointing veteran diplomat George Deek as its first special envoy for Christian relations.

Deek, a member of the Arab Christian community from Jaffa, previously served as Israel’s ambassador to Azerbaijan. In 2018, he became the first Christian ambassador in the country’s history and has been actively involved in Orthodox Christian community life.

Announcing the appointment, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar said the move is intended to deepen Israel’s engagement with Christians around the globe. He highlighted Deek’s diplomatic experience and unique background as key factors in the decision.

The appointment comes in the wake of several high-profile incidents that have drawn criticism from Christian leaders and organizations. In March, Pierbattista Pizzaballa was denied entry to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre during Palm Sunday services, prompting widespread concern. The restrictions were later lifted following public outcry.

Another incident that sparked international condemnation occurred in Lebanon, where an Israeli soldier destroyed a statue of Christ. The act was criticized by Catholic representatives, Ieronymos II of Athens, and the World Council of Churches.

Israeli authorities stated that those responsible were held accountable, and the damaged statue was restored with the assistance of United Nations peacekeepers, according to Catholic outlet OSV News.

Officials say the creation of the new envoy role signals Israel’s intention to address concerns and rebuild trust with Christian communities amid ongoing tensions.
