Israel has officially begun preparations for the 2,000th anniversary of the Baptism of Jesus Christ, a milestone expected to be commemorated by Christians around the world in 2030. The government anticipates welcoming millions of pilgrims to the Holy Land for what is expected to become one of the largest religious gatherings of the decade.

According to The Times of Israel, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has established a special interagency task force at the direction of Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar. The initiative will be led by George Deek, Israel's Special Envoy for Engagement with the Christian World.

The task force will coordinate with Christian churches, religious communities, and church leaders worldwide while overseeing preparations across government agencies for the expected influx of international pilgrims.

Israel's Foreign Ministry described the anniversary of Jesus' baptism in the Jordan River as an event of profound spiritual significance for more than two billion Christians worldwide. Officials believe the 2030 commemoration will be one of the most important events on the global Christian calendar.

"2030 will mark a unique milestone for the Christian world, and Israel is beginning preparations now," Sa'ar said. "Strengthening our ties with the Christian world and ensuring that millions of believers have access to the holy sites of the Holy Land are among our highest priorities."

The foreign minister added that Israel remains committed to guaranteeing freedom of religion and ensuring open access to sacred sites for people of all faiths. Officials hope the anniversary celebrations will enable pilgrims from around the world to visit locations associated with the Gospel accounts and deepen their connection to the origins of Christianity.

Preparations are also underway in neighboring Jordan. Authorities there have announced a development program focused on upgrading infrastructure at Al-Maghtas, the traditional baptism site on the eastern bank of the Jordan River. Israel, meanwhile, continues to expand facilities at Qasr al-Yahud on the western bank, another site traditionally associated with the baptism of Jesus.

Israeli officials estimate that the 2,000th anniversary celebrations could become one of the largest international pilgrimages in recent decades, drawing millions of worshippers and visitors from across the globe.
