A statement in support of Metropolitan Jonathan of Tulchinsk and Bratslav was made by members of the Holy Synod of the Malankara Church: Co-chairman of the Working Group on Coordination of Bilateral Relations between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Malankara Church, Metropolitan Zacharias Mar Nikolovos of New York and Metropolitan of the Diocese of Great Britain, Europe and Africa Abraham Mar Stefanos.
"The news of the verdict passed on Metropolitan Jonathan of the Russian Orthodox Church was an absolute shock for us. The elderly and respected hierarch, who all his life stood guard over the true faith, is now deprived of the opportunity to serve his people. We hope and pray that human rights organizations and all Christian Churches will raise their voices so that the metropolitan will be cleared of all charges brought by the authorities concerned.
Let us also pray that the authorities, who are encroaching on the life of the Church with such unjust measures, refrain from such cruelty in the future," the bishops of the Malankara Church said.
The statement was made at a meeting of Indian hierarchs with Metropolitan Isidore of Smolensk and Dorogobuzhsky held in Smolensk on August 31, 2023 and published on the resources of the Malankara Church. The meeting was also attended by the Secretary of the Department of External Church Relations for Inter-Christian Relations, Hieromonk Stefan (Igumnov).
