On October 10, Orthodox clergy and members of the Lebanese parliament gathered at the invitation of Patriarch John X of Antioch to discuss the severe situation in Lebanon and the Middle East. The participants expressed deep concern over the loss of civilian lives and destruction caused by Israeli strikes. The Antiochian Church called on world leaders to take immediate action to halt the violence, which has already claimed the lives of thousands of innocent people.
According to the press service of the Antiochian Patriarchate, the hierarchs addressed the parliament, urging them to promptly elect a president of the Lebanese Republic in accordance with the country's constitution. They stressed that a new president is essential to restore the functioning of state institutions, which have been suffering for many years, particularly amid the ongoing economic crisis worsened by the war.
Lebanon has been without a president since October 31, 2022, when General Michel Aoun left office at the end of his six-year term.
These developments come against the backdrop of escalating military conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. On September 23, Israel launched "Operation Northern Arrows," targeting Hezbollah facilities to secure the northern regions of Israel. The death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has further intensified tensions. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, Israeli airstrikes in recent days have killed 22 people in Beirut, including women and children. The strikes on Ras al-Nabaa and al-Nweiri districts have also injured 117 people.
