Patriarch Ilia II has issued a message of support to those affected by the unusual snowfalls in Georgia this week. The natural disaster began on February 22, and efforts to mitigate its consequences have been ongoing for several days. In the regions of Adjara and Guria, the snow depth exceeded two meters, causing roof collapses, road blockages, and power outages. Many towns were cut off from the outside world, with school classes and train services canceled.
"We pray for protection and blessings for all those affected," stated the official message released by the Georgian Patriarchate's press service. The Church leader emphasized the importance of solidarity and noted that the government, rescue services, and volunteers are doing everything possible to assist those in need. Additionally, it was announced that the Patriarchate will send food, clothing, medications, and other essentials to those in need.
The government has focused its efforts on dealing with the aftermath of the snowfall in Guria, where, compared to other affected regions in Western Georgia, the situation remains the most problematic, said Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze. According to Georgia's Ministry of Internal Affairs, around 600 rescuers and dozens of units of specialized equipment are involved in the relief efforts.
"The situation is difficult. All efforts are directed at the quickest possible recovery. An unprecedented amount of snow has fallen—similar to what we saw only in 1972," Kobakhidze stated.
In the affected regions, public transport has been halted, train services canceled, and educational institutions closed. In Batumi, part of the airport roof collapsed. A snow avalanche in the Rikoti Pass covered four vehicles, but fortunately, no one was injured, according to Sputnik Georgia.
