Georgy Maximov, visited the region. As a result of his trip, new communities of the Russian Church were established in the cities of Kananga and Mbuji-Mayi. Fr. Georgy conducted catechetical sessions with residents wishing to join the Russian Orthodox Church. Most of the participants were parishioners of the Alexandrian Orthodox Church, and a community from the non-canonical "True Orthodox Church of Greece" also requested to join the Russian Church.
A conflict around the Esphigmenou Monastery, which has long opposed the Ecumenical Patriarchate, is intensifying on Mount Athos. Reports have emerged that local authorities are preparing to close the monastery and evict the monks. Abbot Methodios (Papalambarakopoulos) of Esphigmenou Monastery has called for resistance against the police takeover, stating that the monks will defend the monastery.
The Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada attempted once again to pass a bill banning the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC). However, the procedure was not completed before the deputies went on vacation without considering the bill in its second reading, leading to a scandal in parliament. The Rada is expected to resume work in August, starting with the consideration of the bill effectively banning the UOC.
Catholicos-Patriarch Mar Awa III of the Assyrian Church of the East sent a letter to Patriarch Kirill of Moscow condemning the "heinous acts committed by the Ukrainian government" against the canonical Orthodox Church and Christianity as a whole. For the first time, a Liturgy was celebrated in Afrikaans in Johannesburg. The service was led by Fr. Johan Rossouw, rector of the parish of St. Thomas the Apostle in Bloemfontein. The choir of St. Thomas's parish sang hymns in Afrikaans and Church Slavonic, aiding the congregation's understanding of the prayers. Parishioners from both congregations and those newly interested in Orthodoxy attended the service.
In Pennsylvania, the relics of St. Raphael of Brooklyn, the first Orthodox bishop consecrated in America, were discovered. The relics were found in the cemetery of the village of the Antiochian Archdiocese, where St. Raphael had been buried since 1988. Hundreds witnessed the discovery, led by Archbishop Saba of New York, accompanied by clergy from the Antiochian and American Orthodox Churches.
The head of the Russian Old Believer Church held a liturgy in Africa for the first time. The service was conducted on the feast day of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in the Old Believer Church of Saints Joachim and Anna in Mpererwe, a suburb of Kampala, Uganda. Seventeen newly baptized believers received communion for the first time during this liturgy.
