Commander Alexander Suvorov deserves to be glorified by the Church in the face of saints, said Metropolitan Kirill (Pokrovsky) of Stavropol and Nevinnomyssky, chairman of the Synodal department of the Moscow Patriarchate for interaction with the Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies, his video message was shown at the first international conference "The Legacy of Alexander Suvorov - history, modernity, significance for future generations."
In August 2023, the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, at the suggestion of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, decided to resume the process of preparing for the possible canonization of Alexander Suvorov and decided to transfer this issue to the Synodal commission for the canonization of saints for study. Vladimir Legoyda, Chairman of the Synodal Department for Church–Society and Media Relations, explained that canonization is the prerogative of the Bishops' Council, and it is preceded by a large preparatory process. In May 2024, the chairman of the ROC Synodal Commission for the canonization of saints, Bishop Pankraty of Troitsk (Zherdev), told RIA Novosti that the commission continues to study documents on the possible canonization of Suvorov.
"Today, the issue of the canonization of Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov as truly deserving of it, on the one hand, and on the other hand, as a great banner for our army, for the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is very important. I cordially thank His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia that today the issue of Alexander Vasilyevich's canonization has been referred to the commission of our church. I cordially thank everyone who is happy about the canonization of our beloved commander Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov," said Metropolitan Kirill.
He called Suvorov "a man of holy life, high religiosity," one of the great heroes who forever left a mark in the hearts of descendants and are today an example of self-sacrifice, duty, honor, service to the defense of the Fatherland, shrines and traditions.
"Today, more than ever, we need such heroes. The memory of them, the story about them, the example of their exploits and life is very important to the youth, our soldiers. It is no coincidence that there are many calendars, photographs and other images, mottos of Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov in the zone of a special military operation today," the hierarch noted.
