Russian Orthodox charitable organizations, and in particular Russian Orthodox orphanages, are increasingly common in Russia with the machine translated incomplete list below numbering nearly 30 different institutions all over the country. Some are state sponsored, while others are run privately out of single-family homes, but all are organized and supported by the Russian Orthodox Church.
This list was compiled by miloserdie.ru, one of Russia’s leading sites for charity, in 2006. Since then their number has increased dramatically.
Moscow and Moscow region
Spiritual-educational charitable institution at the Church of the Ascension behind Serpukhovskiy gates
Since 1994, the children left without parental care were brought up. Due to the repair of the building in January 2004, children were moved to other orphanages. After the renovation, 10-12 year old children of servicemen (preferably from the Moscow Military District), who died in the hot spots, were recruited again. It is designed for 12 people. The orphanage was founded in 1844 by Nicholas I in memory of his daughter, who died at age 19 from an unsuccessful delivery and consumption. At the orphanage stood the church of Tsarina Alexandra of Rome. In 1917, the orphanage was closed and the church was blown up. Since 2002, the revival of the orphanage and the church began.
