According to a message on the official website of the Cherkasy Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), the St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral in Cherkasy was looted. Representatives of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (PCU) appropriated church vestments, sacred objects and other utensils. Metropolitan Theodosius of Cherkasy said that the supporters of the OCU who seized the temple also stole materials from the church library and appropriated the clothes of the UOC ministers.
The Cherkasy Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church appealed to the public and law enforcement authorities to help in the return of the stolen panagia.
According to the diocese, during the looting of the building of the Cherkasy diocesan administration by representatives of the OCU, among other shrines, this unique relic was stolen.
The peculiarity of the Panagia is not its antique value or material value, as it was made in modern times. Its exclusivity lies in the fact that inside the Panagia there are particles of the relics of four saints glorified in Cherkassy. The appearance of the relic is also of particular importance.
The Cherkasy Diocese of the UOC calls on anyone who may accidentally see one of the representatives of the OCU wearing this shrine or noticing it on sale to immediately inform the police and the diocese.
The founding of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine took place in December 2018 with the support of the Patriarch of Constantinople, while the decision to create this organization was made during the presidency of Petro Poroshenko. Since its foundation, the PCU, with the assistance of the authorities, has begun to seize churches that previously belonged to the UOC. In addition, the Ukrainian special services have charged the clergy of the UOC with high treason and initiated the imposition of sanctions.
