The Venerable Martyr Fevronia the Virgin suffered for Christ during the reign of Emperor Diocletian, during the severe persecution of Christians. She was brought up in a monastery in the city of Sivapol, in the Assyrian region. The abbess of the monastery was Abbess Vrienna, the aunt of Saint Fevronia, who with special care instructed her in spiritual life.
From a young age, Fevronia was distinguished by her deep piety, love of prayer, reading the Holy Scriptures, and strict monastic life. On Fridays, the sisters of the monastery abandoned their usual obediences and spent the whole day in prayer and spiritual reading. It was often Fevronia who instructed the sisters to read the Holy Scriptures. Gradually, the fame of her pure and holy life spread beyond the monastery.
A noble young widow, Ieria, a pagan, began to visit Saint Fevronia. The conversations with the Christian virgin deeply touched her heart. Influenced by the teachings and prayers of Saint Fevronia, Ieria believed in Christ, accepted Holy Baptism, and led her family to the Christian faith.
At this time, Emperor Diocletian sent soldiers to Assyria to persecute Christians. At the head of the squad were Lysimachus, Celine, and Prim. Celine was particularly cruel, while Lysimachus was disposed towards Christians: his mother died a Christian and bequeathed him not to harm the followers of Christ. Lysimachus and Prim secretly decided to save Christians from torment if possible.
When the soldiers approached the monastery, most of the sisters managed to escape. Only Abbess Vrienna, Nun Fomaida and Saint Fevronia, who was seriously ill at the time, remained in the monastery. The priest, having found them, took pity and offered to leave, but the nuns decided not to leave their place and commit themselves to the will of God.
Selina was informed about the beauty and piety of Saint Fevronia. The saint was brought to him with her hands tied. Celine began to convince her to renounce Christ, to sacrifice to pagan gods, promised honors, wealth and marriage with Lysimachus. But Saint Fevronia firmly replied that she had a Heavenly Bridegroom, Christ, and would not exchange faith in Him for any earthly benefits.
Then Celine subjected the saint to severe torments. Fevronia endured her sufferings with prayer, calling on the Savior not to leave her in a terrible hour. The cruelty of the tormentors was so great that even the people gathered at the place of execution began to demand that the torture of the innocent virgin be stopped. But Celine didn't stop. Saint Fevronia remained faithful to Christ to the end and was beheaded by the sword.
The witness of her feat was the nun Fomaida, who later described the martyrdom of the saint. Ieria, a student of Fevronia, was also there. She openly denounced Selin for his immeasurable cruelty. However, the tormentor did not come to his senses. Shortly after his execution, he suddenly died, and Lysimachus, seeing God's judgment in this, confessed the greatness of the Christian God.
Lysimachus reverently collected the venerable remains of the holy martyr and transferred them to the monastery. Abbess Vrienna and the sisters wept as they greeted the body of Saint Fevronia, praising God for giving her courage and patience. After these events, Lysimachus and Prim renounced paganism, accepted Holy Baptism and monasticism. Ieria distributed her possessions to the monastery and entered the monastery herself, wishing to work in the place of Saint Fevronia.
On the day of Saint Fevronia's martyrdom, a solemn divine service was held annually in the monastery. According to legend, during the all-night vigil, the sisters saw Saint Fevronia standing in her usual place in the temple. Numerous miracles and healings were performed from her relics.
In 363, the relics of the Venerable Martyr Fevronia were transferred to Constantinople. Later, St. James, Bishop of Nisibis, built a church in her honor and transferred a fragment of her holy relics there.
The memory of the Venerable Martyr Fevronia of Sir reminds us of the power of faith, the purity of heart, and the courage of a man who remains faithful to Christ even in the face of suffering.
