On Sunday, October 12, 2025, Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens and All Greece experienced a sudden health scare while presiding over the Divine Liturgy at the Annunciation Cathedral in Athens. The incident occurred during the ordination of Bishop Ioannis of Skiathos, when the 87-year-old archbishop began feeling unwell.
Following the service, Archbishop Ieronymos was swiftly transported to the "Gennimatas" hospital in Athens for medical evaluation, as a precautionary measure. According to Orthodoxia News Agency, doctors diagnosed the archbishop with a mild ischemic attack. Throughout the ordeal, he remained conscious and in communication with those around him.
The Holy Synod of the Church of Greece confirmed that the archbishop's condition was stable and there was no immediate threat to his life. His hospitalization was described as a precautionary step, with continuous monitoring to ensure his recovery.
By October 13, Archbishop Ieronymos was discharged from the hospital. He thanked the medical staff for their care and reassured the public, stating that he was feeling significantly better.
In a message of support, Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem expressed his well-wishes for a swift recovery. Reflecting on the spiritual resilience of Archbishop Ieronymos, he quoted the Apostle Paul: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). The Patriarch expressed confidence that God would grant the Greek archbishop renewed strength and health to continue his vital ministry.
