A possible grave of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was discovered in the church of St. Nicholas in Demre on the territory of Turkish Antalya, which in ancient times was known as Mira. This was reported by the DHA agency.
Archaeologist Ebru Fatma Fyndyk said that the location of the sarcophagus near the church may indicate that it became the last resting place of the saint. The sarcophagus was discovered during drilling on the lower floor of a two-story room under the floor of a religious building. The find corresponds to the burial customs characteristic of Mira. Scientists hope to find inscriptions on the sarcophagus that will help to obtain information about the burial and its time.
In Europe, the image of Santa Claus is identified with Nicholas the Wonderworker. It is believed that the saint was buried in a marble sarcophagus near the necropolis in the World. During the work, archaeologists discovered a large number of pieces of terracotta lamps and animal bones.
