On March 16, 2025, the first Divine Liturgy was held at the newly established Orthodox parish dedicated to St. Panteleimon the Great Martyr and Healer in Nairobi, Kenya. This was reported by the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa.
The service was led by Father Jacob Karandja, dean of the Central Church District, Father Arseny Chitva, dean of the Kakamega District, and Father Athanasius Munyi, a cleric at the Church of St. Catherine in Nairobi.
The parish of St. Panteleimon was established at a school under the care of the Russian Orthodox Church. The service was attended by the school's director, Raphael Opati, teachers, students, and local residents. Many of those present took part in confession and received the Holy Communion.
According to the website of the Patriarchal Exarchate of Africa, this is the second Russian Orthodox Church parish in Nairobi. Since the beginning of 2022, the St. Catherine the Great Martyr parish has been operating in the city, led by Father Jacob Karandja.
A sign on the building of the new parish reads: "You are not lost. You have found the Orthodox Church."
In addition to spiritual care, the parish provides humanitarian aid to local residents. After the service, with the support of the school's director, the clergy distributed cornmeal to widows living in the slums of Kariobangi.
To conclude the celebratory day, a concert was held at the school, where students performed and congratulated the attendees on the opening of the new Orthodox parish.
