On the 26th anniversary of the death of the nuclear submarine missile cruiser Kursk, on August 12, 2026, Metropolitan Mitrofan of Murmansk and Monchegorsk celebrated a requiem mass in Murmansk at the memorial to the military sailors who died in peacetime, better known as the Kursk Wheelhouse.
In prayer petitions, all 118 dead crew members were announced by name. Their faces are depicted on the unique icons of the complex, made and installed in 2020 with the blessing of Metropolitan Mitrofan.
"There is no higher feat, because there is no higher love if someone gives his life for his friends. They gave their lives for their homeland. For you and me. For our future," emphasized Metropolitan Mitrofan. — In order to change the terrible things that our country was heading towards. That's the point of what's happening. That is why we are here and why we will continue to gather here."
The memory of the dead sailors was also honored in the village of Vidyaevo, where the submariners lived and from where they went to sea. Bishop Tarasy of Severomorsk and Umbs celebrated a requiem mass at the memorial complex "To the Sailors who Died in the Ocean."
The commemorative events were attended by representatives of the regional and city authorities, the command and military personnel of the Northern Fleet, representatives of enterprises, veterans and public organizations of the Murmansk region, and numerous citizens.
Flowers were laid at the foot of the monuments to submariners, including in the garrisons of the Northern Fleet.
